London to Celebrate Bluestocking Circle
People staying in cheap hotels in London this spring will be able to explore an exhibition dedicated to a group of independent and creative women who lived in the 18th century.
The Bluestocking Circle was comprised of female writers, artists and thinkers who rejected the traditional views of their time and proved that women could be just as powerful and influential as men.
It included among its members the pioneering feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, artist Angelica Kauffmann and historian Catharine Macaulay.
An exhibition at London's National Portrait Gallery between March 13th and June 15th will explore the life and work of these individuals and also offer insights into the image and identity that creative, independent women had in the 19th century.
One of the main concerns of the display will be the way that the likes of Wollstonecraft and Kauffmann used portraiture to enhance their own standing and that of their work in society.
Another display at the National Portrait Gallery that will relate to strong female characters is the Vanity Fair Portraits show, which will run from February 14th until May 26th.
This exhibition will include shots of subjects including Madonna, Greta Garbo, Scarlett Johansson and Amelia Earhart.
