London

London With over 200 galleries, 300 museums and over 150 events, London literally never stops and has something to offer everyone. It is a year-round tourist centre and few of its attractions actually close down at any point.

From the chic bars of Kensington and Chelsea through to the trendy jaunts of Brick Lane on the other side of the river, London exhilarates and stimulates on every level and it is no wonder it was chosen to represent the 2012 Olympics.

London has the greatest concentration of major attractions in Britain and it doesn't have to cost a fortune to get about in this city. There are 238 free attractions in the capital and there is nowhere else in the world where you can see so much for so little money.

Museums such as the Imperial War Museum, Science Museum, Natural History Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum are all free and well worth a visit.

If you are prepared to shell out slightly more for a fun-filled day, then Madame Tussauds, which contains the wax work models of some of the world's best-loved figures, is a must-see attraction. For a complete overview of the city take a 'flight' on the London Eye, which is located on the south bank of the Thames.

If a day is not long enough to fit in everything that you want to do then don't worry. A number of London's top galleries and museums, including the Tate Modern, Saatchi Gallery, National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Academy of Arts are all open late on Friday and Saturday nights.

If you are lucky enough to visit the capital when the whether is at its best, London's selection of parks and gardens should be top of your agenda. Open space accounts for 30 per cent of the London area and the city itself contains 143 registered parks and gardens.

Battersea Park lies just south of the river or head slightly further out to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew where you can enjoy the peace and serenity of the acres of conservatories displaying a host of flora and fauna.

For a traditional London experience, it is worth taking a trip to Buckingham Palace to experience the changing of the guard, which takes place at 11.30am every day and takes approximately 45 minutes. The Queen's foot guards provide a colourful display for onlookers and are accompanied by a band.

Sports fans in London will not be disappointed. Tours are regularly organised around the rugby stadium at Twickenham and footy fans can visit the Arsenal Museum. The last week of June and the first week of July play host to the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships.

London is also a shopper's paradise, from the market stalls and antique shops of Portobello Road to the large department stores such as Selfridges on Oxford Street and Harrod's of Knightsbridge. A day in London will guarantee you don't come back empty-handed.

An unbeatable way to see London's top sites is to hop on an open-top red bus. These can be booked online and passengers can get on or off whenever and wherever they please and there is a running commentary throughout in a variety of major world languages.

To finish off a long day in the capital enjoy a meal in one of London's top restaurants or savour a pint and a traditional roast dinner in an old-fashioned English pub. If you still want more, London is the party capital and offers clubbing and pubbing opportunities into the early hours.

London is a vibrant and happening city, which can be enjoyed by all ages and on all budgets. As the famous saying goes, "if you're tired of London, you're tired of life".
