The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) is to host Maharaja: The Splendour of India's Royal Courts from October until January next year.

Some 250 pieces from across India will be showcased during the exhibition, whose highlights include turban jewels, gem-encrusted weapons and silver howdah pistols.

These will offer visitors an insight into the treasures held in the Asian nation from the 18th century until the abolishment of royal titles after independence from the British.

Mark Jones, director of the V&A, said: "There has never been an exhibition like this before, showing the spectacular treasures of the courts of the maharajas.

"Many of the objects are leaving India for the first time to come to the V&A. This exhibition will show that India's rulers were significant patrons of the arts, in India and the West."

The exhibition will run from October 10th to January 17th.
