One in the Eye for Harold
Visitors to Hastings in October will be able to enjoy a bit of Norman conquest as the town commemorates the events of 1066.
Hastings beach is the scene for a torchlit procession and bonfire (Guy Fawkes included) by the Bonfire Societies of Sussex on October 14th, the date of the battle, all part of a season of bonfires which include bonfire night itself.
October 14th is the date in 1066 when the tired Saxon army, having marched south from its victory in the battle of Stamford Bridge in Yorkshire, were defeated by William of Normandy's troops after the whole battle turned on the inflicting of the deadly eye wound on Harold, who would have won had the Saxons simply held out until nightfall.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels can enjoy not only visiting the sites of this defining event in British history, but also enjoy seeing the ruins of Hastings Castle and enjoying the attractive scenery of England's south coast.
