Peel It off and Jump in
Some people may want to see the new year in quietly, perhaps by retreating to some remote island, but certain other islands, such as the Isle of Man, offer a rather more lively way of marking January 1st.
The town of Peel on the island is a case in point, with a charity dip being the order of the day as brave swimmers earn money for the local lifeboat and other charities by launching themselves into the icy waters for a swim.
Apart from this novel way to clear the head of new year party excess, the Isle of Man offers many attractions for visitors.
From the electric railway up the west coast to the mountain railway up Snaefell, the Manx have a good way of showing off the island's fine scenery.
For those who want an even better view, the Laxey Wheel is a must-do, while visitors will find that the rumours of tail-less cats are true.
The island has many accommodation options, including cheap hotels.
