Prepare for a marathon day of fun in London The eyes of the sporting world will be on London on April 13th as the city hosts its annual marathon.

London's version of this famous race is one of the best known and most popular in the world, sharing the status of a 'Marathon Major' with the cities of Boston, Berlin, Chicago and New York.

People staying in cheap hotels in London who show up to cheer the runners along will be able to see a number of the city's famous landmarks.

The race begins at Greenwich Park and Blackheath, continuing through Canary Wharf and passing the Tower of London, Embankment, Parliament Square and Birdcage Walk before finishing on The Mall.

London's marathon was first run in 1981, when 7,747 people took part and 6,255 crossed the finish line.

Since then, some 676,743 people have completed the race, including a record 35,674 in 2007.

The most recent winners of the London Marathon were Martin Lel of Kenya in the men's race and China's Chunxiu Zhou in the women's competition.
