Rave with the Rievers

Rave with the Rievers History lovers may find the Scottish Borders a good place to head between March 24th and 27th when the Rievers Festival takes place in the small town of Hawick.

The event celebrates the period from the 13th to the 17th centuries, from the time of William Wallace to the last years before union, when the border rievers would dart back and forth across the border, rustling cattle, doing battle by the sword and generally causing mayhem.

Hawick commemorates this period with concerts and a traditional celidh, a 16th century market, historical re-enactments of life at the time and climaxing with a torch-lit procession and bonfire and fireworks display.

Visitors staying in cheap hotels in the area can also enjoy a tour of the area, which is largely rural and enjoys some fine upland scenery on both sides of the border.

Also nearby is the historic Ettrick Forest.
