Renaissance Artist Gets First London Exhibition
The first major British exhibition of the work of Lucas Cranach the Elder, a German artist who was an important figure in the Renaissance, will be held at the Royal Academy of Arts over the coming months.
In collaboration with the Stadel Museum and Frankfurt am Main, the Royal Academy will present a collection of 70 works by the artist.
Cranach was a successful figure in late 15th and 16th century Germany, in fields ranging from painting to printmaking to book illustration.
He was an important member of the Renaissance and a close friend of theologian and church reformer Martin Luther.
While he was well known for his female nudes, including Venus, Cranach also painted portraits, created propaganda for the Protestant cause and produced treatments on biblical, mythological and classical subjects.
