Scotland Looks Forward to Homecoming 2009

Scotland looks forward to Homecoming 2009 Tourism agency VisitScotland has announced a programme of events, activities and celebrations that will be held in the country in 2009 for its first ever 'homecoming year'.

Homecoming Scotland 2009 is inspired by the 250th anniversary of the birth of poet Robert Burns and will feature events including the world's biggest virtual Burns supper celebration.

People staying in cheap hotels in Edinburgh, Glasgow or any other Scottish city will see the festivities get underway on the Burns Night weekend (January 24th-25th).

From January 24th until February 1st, Glasgow will host Celtic Connections, a music festival that will celebrate Burns' influence on Scottish music.

Scotland's national collection of treasures associated with Robert Burns contains some 36,000 items, some of which will be brought together for the first time in an exhibition that will visit Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Glasgow and others throughout the year.

Art lovers will be able to visit Glasgow's Mitchell Library between April and September to see Inspired, an exhibition that will feature new work by artists including Tracey Emin, John Byrne and Graham Fagen.

Marie Christie, Homecoming Scotland project director, said: "We think there is something in the programme for everyone and we hope Scots, and those who love Scotland, at home and abroad will join the celebrations in 2009."
