Spooky Experience on Offer at York Castle Museum
York Castle Museum has launched a new visitor experience that tells the stories of the people who were once imprisoned in the building's cells.
The York Castle Prison tour takes visitors back to a time when the museum served as a jail to house the county's most dangerous felons and debtors.
People staying in cheap hotels in York can walk through the dark, unwelcoming rooms that prisoners were once kept in and learn all about their crimes and eventual punishment.
York Castle Museum spokesman Mike Woodward said: "From the infamous highwayman Richard Turpin to a young tearaway arrested with a boiled egg in his pocket, York Castle was once full [of] people with incredible and often moving stories to tell.
"Many of the authentic cells still remain here at the castle and for the first time we will be using these to take an in-depth look at this building's fascinating history."
The jail at York Castle Museum was reopened on July 17th following a £200,000 refurbishment.
Visitors can also browse through the institution's permanent collection, which includes a variety of costumes and textiles, military memorabilia, works of art and more.
