Stubbs and Whistlejacket Come to York
York is hosting some illustrious cultural visitors this year as it presents an exhibition featuring a highly recognisable piece of art.
Whistlejacket is a lifesize oil painting of a racehorse by George Stubbs, which has been lent to York Art Gallery by the National Gallery.
The painting forms the centrepiece of the exhibition Stubbs and Whistlejacket in York, which opened on April 26th and will run until August 31st.
People staying in cheap hotels in York will be able to see a number of other pieces in the exhibition, including a portrait of the famous horse Gimcrack and a selection of Stubbs' drawings in the Anatomy of the Horse series.
There is also a selection of contemporary watercolour paintings and prints of York Racecourse, where Whistlejacket won his most famous race nearly 250 years ago.
Another exhibition open at York Art Gallery for the summer is Crying with Laughter, which sets out to tell stories to make visitors laugh and cry using a series of pots and prints.
