They Came, They Saw, They Conkered

They came, they saw, they conkered Those who fondly remember their school days when autumn brought out the conkers will have a chance to relive the experience through the expertise of the best conker-ers around.

Ashton, a small village in Northamptonshire, will be the setting for these nut-swinging warriors in the World Conker Championships, held on Sunday October 14th 2007.

Running since 1965, this contest not only provides enormous fun and a large pile of broken fragments of horse chestnut, but also has a very good cause, raising thousands of pounds for charities which help the blind and visually impaired.

The competition website states that last year £20,000 was raised, taking the all-time total to £310,000.

Located on the village green, the contest is accompanied by a range of stalls, food outlets and entertainment, making it a great reason for families staying in cheap hotels in the area to go bonkers for conkers.
