True Lies

True Lies Those heading for the Lake District may be interested to know that the World's Biggest Liar competition is to be held at the Bridge Inn, Santon Bridge, on the third Thursday of every November.

It is a tribute to Will Ritson, the 19th century landlord of the Wasdale Head Inn, who described the valley as having England's deepest lake (Wastwater – true), the highest mountain (Scafell Pike – true), the smallest church (disputed) and the biggest liar, the last being Ritson himself.

The competition is open to all comers to attempt to emulate Ritson and tell the biggest whoppers, although it is for ordinary mortals; politicians and lawyers are not allowed.

It is no lie to say that the west Cumbria area has plenty for visitors, offering high mountain scenery, the spectacular Wastwater Screes, beaches on the nearby coast, the Sellafield Visitor Centre and fun for all the family on the Ravenglass to Eskdale miniature railway.

Santon Bridge itself is two miles west of Wastwater, with entry forms available from Whitehaven Civic Hall.

The area offers plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
