Turner Collection Returns to Edinburgh
Edinburgh's National Gallery is to open a collection of watercolours by British romantic landscape artist Joseph Turner.
The delicate paintings were donated by Henry Vaughan, a wealthy Victorian art collector, upon his death in 1899 and in line with his wishes must only be displayed in the month of January to ensure they remain undamaged.
Turner is widely credited with laying the foundations for the Impressionist art movement. Born in Covent Garden in 1775, the revered artist first discovered his flare for painting at the age of 14 in his mother's home in Brentford, west London.
Most of his work now resides in the Tate Gallery, but Edinburgh curator Christopher Baker explained that the Vaughan collection had a unique significance to many Scots and was expected to draw large numbers of visitors to the capital.
"We get thousands of people who have come to see the paintings again each year," Mr Baker told Reuters. "It's a perfect way of cheering you up at the beginning of the year - the dark days of an Edinburgh winter."
Hotel accommodation is always in short supply early January due to the Hogmanay celebrations so visitors are advised to book as early as possible.
