V&A Gets Imaginative with Mapmaking

V&A gets imaginative with mapmaking Visitors staying in cheap hotels in London over the coming months will be able to visit the Victoria & Albert Museum as it explores the imaginative side of mapmaking.

In its Mapping the Imagination show, which runs until April 27th, the museum will be considering the idea that cartography is not simply the objective exercise that it seems to be.

The exhibition is based on the concept that all maps are to some extent products of the imagination and are shaped by the cultural and social conditions in which they were created and the personality of their maker.

Maps made to inform and to entertain are included in the showcase, as well as maps enhanced by imaginative decorations.

There will also be pieces that use the traditional iconography of maps to express ideas and feelings and charts of invented locations.

People with an interest in experimental art may also want to visit the V&A's exhibition of the work of Curtis Moffat, an abstract photographer who worked in the early 20th century.
