Weak Pound 'helping UK Tourism'
The UK tourism industry is starting to see the benefit of the weak value of the pound as more people visit from overseas, according to new figures.
Statistics from the International Passenger Survey - the most significant measure of inbound trips to the UK - show that 8.9 million foreign tourists visited in the first four months of the year, spending just over £4.4 billion.
This represents an improvement from the figures covering the first quarter of 2009.
Furthermore, the number of overseas trips taken by Britons fell by 16 per cent in the first four months of the year, suggesting that cheap hotels in Edinburgh and other domestic tourism options could be proving popular.
Sandie Dawe, chief executive of VisitBritain, said: "These are stronger figures than we have seen for the start of the year and further evidence that a weak pound has indeed drawn increasing numbers of visitors to Britain.
"However, sterling is already recovering against key currencies, so we cannot rest on our laurels and, as we enter another summer season, must continue to drive awareness of Britain's appeal and why they should visit now."
Both the Edinburgh International Festival and the Festival Fringe will get underway in August, providing a substantial boost to the Scottish capital's appeal to tourists.
