York St Mary's to Present New Installation
People with a passion for discovering new art will be able to book cheap hotels in York this year to see an installation at the church of St Mary's.
Five Sisters, which has been created by art critic Matthew Collings and mosaic artist Emma Biggs, will open on May 23rd and stay on display throughout the summer.
The work is based on the themes of how people preserve objects from the past and how they decide whether something has value or if it should simply be disposed of.
Named after and inspired by the Five Sisters window in York Minster cathedral, the installation consists of oil paintings that were created by both artists and a giant mosaic piece.
Some 6,000 shards of medieval pottery are being made available to the artists for the mosaic, which will cover almost the entire floor space of the church.
St Mary's is a medieval church that first opened as a venue for contemporary visual art exhibitions in 2004.
An artist is commissioned by York Museums Trust every year to create a site-specific installation in the church.
