A Merrie Old Time

A Merrie old time Visitors to Hawaii will be able to delve deep into the culture of the islands in April, when the Merrie Monarch Hula festival takes place.

Held from April 8th (Easter Sunday) to the 14th, the event is named after the 19th century King David Kalakaua, whose enthusiasm for music, arts and culture enabled Hawaiian culture to survive into modern times.

The festival is, therefore, not just about hula hoops but music, arts, crafts and dance.

Visitors staying in cheap hotels on the islands will also be able to enjoy most of the events for free, according to organisers, which include music on Moku Ola (Coconut Island) and the royal parade in downtown Hilo.

Tickets to hula competitions cost between $15 (£7.59) and $25.

As well as the festival, visitors to the beautiful islands can enjoy surfing, wildlife, outstanding scenery including the largest volcanoes on Earth, plus the chance to see the historic Pearl Harbour, where oil still bubbles up from sunken warships.
