Big Apple Expects 50m by 2012
The lure of cheap hotels in New York City and the destination's many other attractions are set to see 50 million people visiting the Big Apple every year by 2012.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that tourism was progressing so quickly in New York that the 50 million annual visitor goal had been brought forward three years from the previous target of 2015.
The '50 million by 2015' objective was announced in 2006, before a record-breaking period of growth that saw New York City welcome 46 million visitors last year.
Speaking in a pre-recorded message at an event hosted by George Fertitta, chief executive of NYC & Company, Mayor Bloomberg said tourism was "booming" in New York and the city was confident of reaching its goal of 50 million visitors.
He added: "George Fertitta and NYC & Company deserve a lot of the credit, but no one has a better city to sell.
"No matter what your pleasure from the Broadway lights to Brooklyn Heights, the Bronx Zoo to Jimmy Choo you can find it in the five boroughs."
According to Mr Fertitta, New York is now more "vibrant, welcoming and easier to navigate" than ever before.
