Discover Art in 1940s New York
Travellers staying in cheap hotels in New York this summer will be able to expand their knowledge about the famous city's art scene in the 1940s.
With the outbreak of World War II in Europe, many artists sought refuge in New York, including some who were experimenting in fields such as Surrealism.
Some of the visionaries of the time, such as Adolph Gottlieb and Wolfgang Paalen, exhibited at the city's galleries, including the Julian Levy Gallery and Peggy Guggenheim's Art of this Century.
Until September 8th this year, the Solomon R Guggenheim museum in New York will host an exhibition of work by artists who worked or exhibited in the city in the 40s.
The display presents a time of transition and exchange between generations and eras.
It features paintings and sculptures by the likes of Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and William Baziotes, which give a striking and eloquent depiction of the cultural landscape of New York in the 1940s.
