Dragon Boat Festival Docks in New York

Dragon Boat Festival docks in New York People staying in cheap hotels in New York at the beginning of August will be treated to an impressive spectacle as the city hosts the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival.

Taking place on August 2nd and 3rd at the city's Flushing Meadows park, this event sees two teams take part in a breathless race in narrow boats shaped like dragons.

The rowers propel their boats in time with a pounding rhythm provided by on-board drummers.

The Dragon Boat Festival is a significant holiday in China that commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a minister who was known for his wisdom and honesty.

According to legend, Qu Yuan threw himself into the Mi Lo river when China fell into the hands of corrupt officials, and the frantic activity of the rowers in the Dragon Boat festival represents the attempts of local people to rescue him.

In addition to the race itself, visitors to the New York festival will be entertained by music and dance performances and displays of kung fu.
