Empire Race Building

Empire race building For those who feel super fit there is an alternative way of spending some time in one of the world's most famous buildings on February 6th.

That is the date when the New York road runners club set off on the Empire State Building run-up, in which the fittest (or the maddest) attempt to do inside the building what King Kong did outside, leaving taking the lift to others as they run the 1,576 steps to the 86th floor.

Non-members of the Roadrunners Club should contact the organisation to get an entry form.

For non-runners, the building is still a huge attraction, even though it is no longer the World's highest, offering spectacular views and an impressive testament to the capacity of 1930's architects to build high.

The city below, of course, needs no introduction for those staying in its cheap hotels and enjoying the sights and sounds, whether visiting the Statue of Liberty, shopping in Macy's or enjoying the 24-hour atmosphere of a city that never sleeps.

Except, of course, for those who have just run up a skyscraper.
