From the Freeze to the Flowers

From the freeze to the flowers Chicago in January may not be the warmest place on Earth, but it still offers a warm, floral oasis in its heart.

Running from December 9th to January 7th, Lincoln Park Conservatory hosts the Winter Flower and Train Show, open 09.00 local time until 17.00 with free entry.

Inside, a large model city featuring many Chicago landmarks, complete with miniature trains running here and there, sits amid a vast array of pink, white and red poinsettias in a tropical wonderland.

Outside the scaled-down version, the city outside still has plenty more to offer at any time.

It contains a vast array of modern architecture, particularly skyscrapers, with the Sears Tower being the tallest building in America, offering panoramic views over Lake Michigan from its 103rd floor skydeck.

For those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, museums and other indoor attractions abound, such as the Field Museum, which contains the most complete T-rex fossil yet found, the National Time Museum or the Adler planetarium.

As for those who want to keep their feet tapping, the city is famous for its blues, not to mention classical music provided by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

The "windy city" has plenty of accommodation options, including cheap hotels.
