Getting Away from Routine 'top Reason for Holidays'
Taking a break from one's routine and getting away from everyday worries is the most common reason among British people for taking a holiday, according to research.
Nearly a third (32 per cent) of the respondents to a poll by the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) said they went on holiday for a break from routine, while 19 per cent said they enjoyed spending time with family or friends.
Taking in some foreign culture (18 per cent) was the third most common motivation, followed by simple relaxation (15 per cent) and the opportunity to enjoy some sunshine.
Cheap hotels in Orlando are expected to be a popular option this year, with Abta revealing that the Florida hotspot has already been attracting bookings, along with destinations in Egypt and Turkey.
The travel association expects holidays to be particularly important this year as Britons head overseas to get away from the economic situation at home.
Abta head of communications Casia Zajac said: "Holidays are important to people in different ways but the research is clear that holidays are a vital part of people's year and still will be this year despite the economic downturn.
"Planning and anticipating a holiday can sustain people through the winter months and the bleak financial times that are upon us."
