Groundhog Day
For those who love to do something different, the town of Punxsutawney in Pennsylvania offers the chance to do just that, despite it's reputation for doing exactly the same thing day after day.
Groundhog Day is on February 2nd, a day made famous by the Bill Murray film about a man suffering a bizarre deja vu experience.
The ceremony, held on the interestingly named Gobbler's Knob, sees local dignitaries from the Groundhog Club witness the emergence of a woodchuck, or groundhog, from his burrow to predict the weather, which, in a faint echo of St Swithins Day, will be set in stone for six weeks thereafter – either more winter or the onset of spring – depending on the length of the hog's shadow.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels in the town will also be able to enjoy various fairs and festivities in the days around the event, including a Groundhog banquet.
The only disappointment for some will be that, unlike Bill Murray, they won't be able to do it all again the following day.
