Life on the Edge
For those visiting New York, Manhattan may seem an imposing place, with its busy streets and towering buildings, but there is an alternative and somewhat unusual way of discovering the island.
Admittedly it takes a fair bit of stamina, but the Great Saunter, an annual 32-mile walk along the whole shoreline of the island, is a great way to enjoy a little more peace along with some great sights across the water at the harbour, Statue of Liberty and the other New York boroughs.
Held on May 5th 2007, the event begins at 07:30 local time near the South Street Seaport and lasts for 12 hours, with options to dip in and out of the event rather than walk the full circumference of the island.
Apart form the walk, New York offers a range of sights and experiences for visitors staying in cheap hotels.
Among these are trips up the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty, shopping in Macy's or resting those tired feet in Central Park.
