Major Cities to Benefit from Bank Holiday Exodus

Major cities to benefit from bank holiday exodus Cheap hotels in New York, Paris and Amsterdam will be among the establishments to benefit from an influx of British holidaymakers over the coming weekend, research by the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) suggests.

Abta estimates that a total of 1.9 million UK holidaymakers will leave the country between May 23rd and 26th, to get away from the British weather and take advantage of the beginning of school half-terms.

The top five city break destinations this weekend are set to be Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin, Rome and New York.

Cheap hotels in Majorca will also be popular as Spain continues to be British tourists' favourite holiday destination, with the Canary and Balearic islands leading the way.

Italy, Turkey, Egypt and Greece are also set to see high numbers of visitors from the UK.

Abta president Justin Fleming said: "Much has been [said] about the credit crunch this year, but there is real strength in the travel industry as is shown by the number of people leaving the country this weekend.

"Many of our members are reporting good financial results against a steady increase in bookings."
