March for Harvey Milk
While an invitation to 'march for milk' initially sounds as if it would only appeal to hardcore fans of dairy products, this San Francisco event is in fact an important tribute to a man who has become an icon to the gay community.
Every November residents of San Francisco and visitors to the city gather to commemorate Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected city supervisor of San Francisco.
Milk and then-mayor of San Francisco George Moscone were assassinated in 1978, which sparked outrage at the time and still prompts people to speak out in support of gay rights today.
The affair was made all the more controversial and has stayed in the minds of many Americans due to the fact that Milk's assassin was only sentenced to seven years and eight months in jail, leading to accusations that the American judicial system was institutionally homophobic.
Despite its grave themes this event is still enjoyed by its participants as a celebration of Milk's achievements and his power as a gay rights activist.
