Meet Punxsutawney Phil on Groundhog Day

Meet Punxsutawney Phil on Groundhog Day Groundhog Day is one of America's strangest but most popular traditions, which every year sees hundreds of people gathered to watch a rodent predict the weather.

On February 2nd, the people of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania meet at the interestingly named Gobbler's Knob to see if they are in for six more weeks of winter or if spring is on the way.

Punxsutawney Phil, a local woodchuck, emerges from his burrow and, if the day is sunny and he casts a shadow, legend dictates that winter will last another six weeks.

If there are clouds in the sky, however, and no groundhog-shaped shadow can be seen, then the people of Pennsylvania can look forward to an early spring.

Immortalised in the 1993 Bill Murray film Groundhog Day, this tradition seems bizarre to outsiders but is approached with tongues firmly planted in cheeks and has developed into something of a national media event in the USA.

Visitors interested in experiencing Groundhog Day for themselves should get their hotels booked soon and hope that next year's prediction brings some sunshine to their holiday.
