New Year in New York
New York is a hectic and bustling city on every day of the year, but none more so than on New Year's Eve.
For partygoers who love the energetic and vigorous atmosphere of a major metropolis on a big occasion, there is nowhere better than the Big Apple when the clock strikes midnight on December 31st.
Arguably the most famous and popular venue of all is Times Square, where a two-metre ball begins to descend from its point atop number one Times Square at 11:59, moving down a 20-metre flagpole and touching the ground at midnight, sparking unbridled delight among onlookers.
The best views for this famous moment are along Broadway from 43rd to 53rd Street, but anybody hoping for a good vantage point should be prepared to wait for at least four hours before midnight.
Another option for those staying in cheap hotels in New York is Central Park, which holds a four-mile midnight run event for fitness fanatics, with live DJs, dancing, a costume parade and fireworks all incorporated into the occasion.
Visitors can don the wackiest costume they can get their hands on and join the parade around the famous park.
For those who would prefer a quieter celebration, New York's Jivamukti yoga centre holds an evening of silence on New Year's Eve, where visitors can meditate, practise yoga, read or simply chill out and escape from the chaos on the streets outside.
