New York Bids Goodbye to Coney Island
Brooklyn Museum will raise the question of whether New Yorkers will soon be bidding farewell to one of the city's most famous areas.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels in New York will be able to see the Goodbye Coney Island? exhibition until April 6th.
The exploration of this fabled part of New York includes more than 50 photographs from Brooklyn Museum's collection.
It traces the evolution of Coney Island over the past 125 years and charts the many transformations that the area has undergone since it first opened as a popular resort in the 19th century.
Images included in the display present some of the island's most famous landmarks and attractions, such as the Oriental Hotel, Steeplechase, Luna Park, the beach and the boardwalk.
Breading Way, George Bradford Brainerd, Stephen Salmieri and Lynn Butler are among the artists whose work features in the exhibition.
The retrospective is particularly poignant owing to the fact that a potential redevelopment could change the appearance and character of this part of Brooklyn again in the future.
