New York Met Showcases Victorian Collages
People who book a cheap hotel in New York might be interested in heading to a current exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Playing with Pictures: The Art of Victorian Photocollage will be on show at the museum until May 9th and shows a number of works displaying early collage techniques.
What is unique about the works is that they were created 60 years before artists widely used the style.
Before avant-garde artists made collages, aristocratic Victorian women had been creating photocollages for years.
The exhibition shows 48 "whimsical and fantastical" creations using photographs and watercolours, many of which combine "human heads and animal bodies, placing people into imaginary landscapes, and morphing faces into common household objects", the museum said.
It added: "With sharp wit and dramatic shifts of scale akin to those Alice experienced in Wonderland, these images stand the rather serious conventions of early photography on their heads."
