New York 'top US Destination in 2009'

New York 'top US destination in 2009' New York City was the United States' most popular tourist destination among visitors of all nationalities last year, it has been revealed.

This is the first time since 1990 the city has achieved the top spot.

It welcomed 45.25 million visitors from across the US and the world in 2009, placing it ahead of Orlando, its nearest competitor.

Some 8.6 million overseas tourists travelled to New York last year, meaning it remained the leading US destination for international visitors ahead of Los Angeles.

The figures were announced by mayor Michael Bloomberg at the Greenhouse Cafe in Brooklyn.

He said: "Over the past eight years, our efforts to make New York City an even more exciting place to visit have helped produce a record number of tourists and create thousands of jobs.

"Last year, while tourism declined significantly in cities across the country, we fared far better than most. In fact, for the first time in 20 years, we were the most popular tourism destination in the country, surpassing Orlando."

Cheap hotels in New York look set to remain popular this year, with visitor numbers expected to continue rising to reach 46.7 million.
