New York Voted World's No 1 City
Holidaymakers staying in cheap hotels in New York this year will experience the world's number one city for travellers, according to the latest Sunday Times Travel Magazine readers' awards.
The Big Apple took the top award ahead of a number of other world leaders, namely Sydney, San Francisco, Cape Town and Bangkok.
Considering New York's reputation as a haven for shoppers, the current exchange rate of around $2 to £1 was thought to be a strong factor in its popularity among Brits, as well as other cities such as Boston, Miami and Las Vegas.
Aside from the shopping, readers of the Sunday Times said they enjoyed New York because of its cinematic appeal.
"Brownstone apartments, steam out of manholes. It feels like being in the movies," one previous visitor said.
The best European city for travellers is London, according to the Sunday Times awards, followed by Edinburgh, Paris, Barcelona and Rome.
Australia took the honour for the best worldwide country, followed by the USA, New Zealand, Thailand and the Maldives, while Italy won the top European award, ahead of Greece, France, Spain and Switzerland.
