Areas of Interest in New York

70 floor's up the 'Top of the Rock' has an outstanding 360-degree view of New York.  Everything from the Statue of Liberty to Central Park can be seen from this breathtaking spot.  The Rockefeller Center can be found on West 50th Street and opens from 8am to midnight each day.

Circle line sightseeing cruises are a fun and relaxing way of discovering New York.  As well as circling the statue of liberty there are magnificent views of the skyline. Professional tour guides commentate the magnificence of mid and lower Manhattan. Skyline cruises offer evening sails with dinner and cocktails for a different view of the city.

The statue of liberty is one of the most recognisable icons in New York.  Although visitors cannot enter the statue anymore the museum is still worth a visit at the base of the statue.

For culture visitors need to go no further than the stretch of 5th Avenue between 79th Street and 91st.  Known as the Museum mile, Metropolitan, Guggenheim and the National Design Museum are all worth a visit. 

West 14th Street features established names such as Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney, as well as lesser-known shops such as Yigal Azrouel and Carlos Miele.  Gansevoort Streets around the corner offer lower prices as well as an array of bars and restaurants.

Central Park covers 50 blocks of the city with grass, woodland, lakes and gardens.  The Wollman Ice Rink also features here during colder months.  The park is an oasis for locals and a great attraction for tourists, so is truly worth a visit.

Eating Out in New York

On Columbus Circle, head to the Time Warner Center for a light lunch.  Wholefoods in the basement has a takeaway counter serving everything from sushi to soups.   

The queues outside Sarabeth's show how popular it is.  Serving one of the best brunches with a famous omelette, branches can be found on the Upper West and East sides, as well as at Central Park. The Parker Meridien Hotel has a small burger joint which is delicious and affordable suitable for lunch or a cheaper evening meal. 

The Modern offers delicious three course meals in a formal dining room.  The menu incorporates local ingredients such as Long Island Duck Breast.  The bar area also serves tapas dishes.  This excellent restaurant can be found next to the Museum of Modern Art.

New York Nightlife

The World Bar at United Nations Plaza is a chic and sophisticated cocktail bar.  The drinks menu reflect the international clientele this bar gets from the United Nations Head Quarters just across the road.  For a classic and sophisticated cocktail, Bemelman's Bar on 76th Street features a baby grand piano and waiters in white jackets.

Comix is an enormous comedy club on 14th Street.  The four bars have friendly staff, and although the venue has fancy décor it is not as pretentious as many places in this area.  Quality food is also served here.

Visitors to New York must treat themselves and experience a Broadway show.  TKTS Booths sell discounted tickets for the current day performances.

Local Information

Tourists will usually spend most of their time in Manhattan and the grid road system makes it easy to navigate.  Avenue's run north to south and streets run east to west.  Broadway runs diagonally through the city.  Public transport is easy to use and Metrocards can be bought to cover either six rides or a week's unlimited travel.  The main visitor information centre can be found on 8th Avenue.

From the Airport to New York

Frequent bus services run from Newark Airport to the Port Authority Bus Terminal.  Buses from the JFK Airport also service here as well as Grand Central Station and Penn Station on a regular basis.
