New York

New York The Big Apple, the city so nice they named it twice, the city that never sleeps – New York conjures up many memorable images in the minds of travellers.

Whether heading out to watch the Yankees at a baseball diamond, going shopping, catching a show on Broadway or just having a picture taken with one of the city's iconic yellow cabs or plumes of street-side steam, thousands of Brits each year plan to take a trip to the US east coast metropolis.

World renowned shops such as Macy's, Bloomingdales, Tiffany & Co provide a huge pull for tourists to the city, whether travellers are heading out to do their Christmas shopping, or just to treat themselves to a special much needed or wanted item.

Famous venue Madison Square Gardens will play host to a series of events in the coming months which may have Brits scrambling to the city, whether to see British rock legends The Who or to get ringside seats to watch the Knicks play basketball.

Up-coming shows on Broadway, a world-famous location for the some of greatest stage shows on earth include Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Lion King, Chicago, The Phantom of The Opera and Monty Python's Spamalot. Theatre trips are once of the most popular pastimes enjoyed by visitors to the city

Sight-seers have plenty to snap their cameras at throughout the city – whether a trip to the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building, historic and original buildings and monuments litter the city. New York is also remarkable for Central Park, a vast expanse of greenery situated right in the heart of the busy district of Manhattan.

The city's inhabitants are proud of the cultural diversity to be found throughout New York - which provides excellent choice and variety for drinking and dining throughout the destination. Whether looking to find American, Chinese, Kosher, French, Greek Indian, Italian, Thai cuisine or almost any other food in the world, New York is likely to have a restaurant to suit a visitor's taste. The city's Tourist board also provides recommendations of restaurant of the week, allowing travellers the chance to choose a spot even before they jump on the plane.

Arts are also available to visitors and residents in abundance who may not find an interest in the city's varied shopping, sports, shows and dining, with the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Intrepid Museum providing high culture for vistors.

Although many travellers would like to stay in the Sheraton hotel, the city also provides cheap hotels for travellers with a more modest budget. New York's tourist board recommends that some of the "best bargains" to be found provide "first class service and luxurious amenities that one would expect from much higher priced luxury hotels".

Flights are available to the city from across the UK, including London, Newcastle, Manchester, Glasgow and Belfast, while a new route is also set to take from Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

A more sombre side to New York can also be viewed at Ground Zero – the former site of the World Trade Centre towers. Following the infamous terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001, Ground Zero offers visitors the chance to quietly pay their respects to the many who lost their lives and view a photo exhibition paying tribute to the many brave fire-fighters involved in the rescue operation.
