Not Very Placid

Not very placid Lake Placid is a place that no longer lives up to its name, for the one-time Winter Olympics venue is a place for serious hair-raising action.

Set in upstate New York, the venue boats a new bobsled course, open for visitors from December 23rd on every day except Mondays and Tuesdays, enabling visitors to experience the intense thrill of hurtling down a narrow icy corridor at terrifying speed.

Having a go on the bobsled costs $65 (£33), while a luge rocket ride can be undertaken for $45.

Visitors staying in cheap hotels in the area can also enjoy a vast array of other sports, from downhill skiing to ice skating, cross-country skiing to snowshoeing.

The location in New York State also makes it possible to combine the trip with a visit to the Big Apple, as the city that never sleeps offers up its myriad attractions, from shopping in Macy's to taking in the view from the Empire State Building.
