Nothing Placid About This Contest
Professional drivers from one of America's most popular and raucous sports, Nascar racing, will be testing out their skills on a slightly more slippery surface in the Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenge at Lake Placid, New York in January.
Organised by Nascar legend Geoff Bodine, this event sees professional drivers competing over the final nine corners of the Lake Placid bobsled track to raise money for charity.
The teams' brakemen are traditionally provided by the New York Army National Guard, providing a mix of characters and expertise to ensure some interesting race results.
People staying in cheap hotels in New York can catch this event, which is traditionally competitive but always in good spirit, at the Olympic Sports Complex between January 4th and 6th 2008.
Lake Placid is situated in New York's Adirondack mountain range and visitors to the region can take a tour of the surrounding terrain.
The lake after which the village is named covers an area of approximately 2,170 acres and the area offers a number of opportunities for hiking, fishing and playing golf.
