Rattling Good Fun

Those who know, deep down, that snakes are lovely creatures and not at all slimy and scary could find themselves in scaly paradise if they head to Oklahoma in April.

On April 30th to 1st May, the Waynoka Snake Hunt takes place, giving reptile enthusiasts an exciting opportunity to track down and capture a western diamondback rattlesnake.

The Waynoka Saddle Club, which organises the event, runs a competition for the largest captured live snake, along with a carnival, food (including snake meat) and an auction of the largest snakes.

Those wanting to take part would need an Oklahoma state hunting licence, a fact which may provide a good excuse for more wary visitors to simply enjoy the festivities, sit back and watch the experts grapple with the serpentine wonders.

Although the bite of a western diamondback rattlesnake is potentially fatal, there will of course be medical staff on hand in the unlikely event of the timid creatures biting.

Waynoka will also have plenty of welcoming staff on hand in cheap hotels.
