San Francisco Hosts 49th International Film Festival

San Francisco hosts 49th International Film Festival Currently underway in California is the longest-running film festival in North and South America, the San Francisco International Film Festival.

Filmmakers from all over the world flock to the US each year for the two-week festival, which takes in a variety of genres including feature length films, documentaries and shorts during the 200 screenings taking place during the festival.

Over 80,000 visitors will watch films made in countries all over the world including Russia, Japan, France and the US, with 22 awards going to the best of cinema's talents.

Werner Herzog is set to win the director's award while Ed Harris and Jean-Claude Carriere will take the acting and screenwriting awards respectively, the slashfilm website reports.

A State of Cinema speech given by Tilda Swinton will also be featured in the live awards ceremony, while Guy Maddin will receive the Golden Gate Persistence of Vision Award.

"Life is like a cinema" was the opening line of the first film to be screened at the festival last Thursday, during the Hong Kong musical Perhaps Love.
