Say Hello the Sea Lions of San Francisco
Holidaymakers enjoying stays in hotels in San Francisco in January will have an opportunity to meet some of the city's most unusual residents.
On January 19th San Francisco's Pier 39 will celebrate the 17th anniversary of the arrival of the city's sea lions, who have entertained thousands of visitors over the years.
Numbers of the animals soar every January as they return to the San Francisco Bay area in search of herring.
Visitors can get up close and personal to the playful animals and also talk to representatives from the Marine Mammal Centre.
The sea lions first appeared in the area in 1990 and their sudden arrival is thought to have been prompted by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
Pier 39 is one of the premier attractions in San Francisco Bay, with hundreds of stores and restaurants, street performers and live daily entertainment.
