Set Sail for Florida's Pirate Fest
Anyone out there who has never let go of their childhood dream of being a swashbuckling pirate may enjoy a holiday in Florida in January for the Gasparilla festival.
This event takes place in the Tampa Bay region of the Sunshine State and consists of the Gasparilla Extravaganza on January 19th and the Gasparilla Pirate Fest on January 26th.
The first instalment of this festival is an alcohol-free occasion to celebrate the beginning of the Gasparilla season in Tampa, with a number of shows that children will love, including a parade and a 'pre-schoolers stroll', where kids get to dress up and walk a half-mile route.
An 'air invasion' will also keep the youngsters enthralled, with past shows including aerobatic performances by the Red Baron squadron and displays by vintage aircraft.
On January 26th, the Gasparilla Pirate Fest will begin as the tall-masted Jose Gasparilla pirate ship leads a flotilla of boats from the south end of Hillsborough Bay.
This mock invasion culminates as the mayor surrenders to the pirates before more than 100 floats parade through the city.
The Gasparilla Pirate Fest began in 1904 and nowadays draws crowds of over 500,000 people.
