A major redevelopment project has been underway at the museum since May 2007 and will mark the completion of its second stage with the opening of the new areas on May 19th.

The refurbished galleries opening this month, which are all based in the American wing, include the Charles Engelhard court, which will house around 60 examples of sculpture, mosaics, stained glass and more.

People with an interest in architecture will be able to explore three centuries of American design in the period rooms, while the balcony galleries will bring together the museum's impressive collections of ceramics, glass, silver and pewter.

Metropolitan Museum of Art spokesman Morrison Heckscher said: "The goal of the comprehensive renovation of the American wing is to present the museum's superlative collections in the clearest and most logical, as well as most beautiful, manner possible."

Exhibitions running at the Met this summer will explore subjects including African and Oceanic Art and the work of Francis Bacon.
