As well as being a luxurious holiday destination and home to a number of cheap hotels, the islands of Hawaii are something of a Mecca for wave riders owing to the enormous surf that can regularly be seen off its shores.

To take advantage of the unique conditions the island throws up, the final leg of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) men's world tour this year will be held on Oahu's north shore.

Surfing aficionados and adrenaline junkies refer to the spot as the 'Banzai Pipeline'.

According to the ASP, the pipeline is the "powder keg of the surfing world" and attracts surfers from hundreds of countries.

It is a notoriously dangerous break to surf, but can reportedly offer great rewards to those brave enough to tackle it.

Luckily for visitors to Hawaii between December 8th and 20th, participation in the event is not mandatory and the area is well known for throwing 'apres-surf' parties.

Oahu is home to the city of Honolulu, the capital of the state of Hawaii.
