Sword Dancing Comes to Streets of New York
Visitors to New York City in February may find that they need to keep a safe distance as a group of traditional sword dancers take to the streets of the Big Apple.
Every year a troupe of exponents of this traditional English art entertain onlookers at a number of well-known New York locations, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Jefferson Market Library.
The dance involves a group of people who are linked in a ring by their swords, who move around in coordination to create shapes and patterns without breaking the circle.
There are similarities between the practice and other traditional English customs of Morris and folk dancing.
New York City has a number of its own cultures and traditions based on the range of different ethic groups that the city is home to.
