Take the Plunge
For those who like to do something really daring in the winter, an opportunity presents itself to visitors to Virginia Beach on February 3rd.
The 15th Polar Plunge takes place that day, which, as the name suggests, involves people leaping into the freezing waters of the North Atlantic for a swim, not just for fun but to raise money for Special Olympics Virginia, a charitable initiative to provide sporting activities and coaching for the disabled in the state.
A minimum donation of $100 (£52) is required to pay for the privilege of demonstrating bravery beyond the call of sanity.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels in the area will be able to enjoy plenty more activities and entertainment at the festival, all for a good cause, such as such as ice-carving, music and rides for children.
There is also a heated indoor tent, which many will welcome gratefully, not least if they have just emerged from the chilly sea.
