Visit New York for the Dragon Boat Festival

Visit New York for the Dragon Boat Festival Flushing Meadows Park in New York will prove a popular location with tourists in August as it hosts the 19th annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival.

Travellers staying in cheap hotels in New York will be able to attend the highly popular event on August 8th and 9th this year.

The festival sees hundreds of teams consisting of thousands of rowers coming together to compete in dragon boat races.

China's Dragon Boat Festival, which is a major public holiday in the country, was originally founded to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, an idealistic reformer who committed suicide after learning that his home province had been taken over by invaders.

The New York festival has become a highly popular tradition, attracting more than 50,000 visitors every year.

As well as the dragon boat racing, the 2009 festival will feature kung fu displays, live music, dancing and a dumpling eating contest.
