For those who enjoy historical re-enactments of battles from organisations like the Sealed Knot, similar entertainment is provided for visitors to West Virginia in July.
It was here in 1861 that the first land battles of the American Civil War took place, with the battle of Laurel Hill near Belington on July 11th being one of them.
On July 21st, 22nd and 23rd a re-run of the battle (minus the fatalities) takes place as armies in full dress and equipped with more blank rounds than one can shake a musket at provide a re-run of the events which saw the union gain control of west Virginia, which then broke away from the rest of Virginia to become a state in its own right.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels in the area can watch for free as this important historical event is acted out.
