Wool You Believe It?

Wool you believe it? Those who fancy seeing something really different when paying a visit to the US will be able to do so by wiggling along to the town of Banner Elk in North Carolina to see the Woolly Worm Festival.

Not unlike Groundhog Day, the festival is based on the notion that the worms (or woolly bear caterpillars to be precise) are supposed to have weather-predicting powers, due to the shading of their stripes, which in turn will predict what the forthcoming weather is likely to be.

However, given that there will be lots of these wiggly invertebrates around, it has been decided that the best way to judge which of them should be used as a crawling barometer is to first have a race.

The Woolly Woad Race race is held at the local elementary school, which adult visistors staying in cheap hotels in the area can enter for a fee of $5 (£2.50), includes not just the races and the opportunity for the winner to predict the winter forecast, but also food, fun and music.
